Until we meet again....

Yesterday we said good bye to Miss Sassafras. As you know she was a strong fighter. She found her way to our home in February 2013. We rescued her from Muttville in SF, but she was found in LA as a stray. Sassafras Plea Video from LA  She was with our family about 17 months before her diagnosis of cancer and the start of her battle with hemangiosarcoma in July 2014. The rest of her history can be read in prior blog posts. An update since our last post: In June 2015 we had her spleen removed and it was full of cancer nodules. The surgery was a success and she was doing great. We were #Makingeverydaycount.
The last few months after losing Indigo in May, Sass and I became best buddies. We consoled each other as needed and enjoyed the good times.
I am very in-tune with Sass and recently I knew something was wrong. (Always listen to your gut!) Beginning on Nov. 13 I noticed Sass was really "off." We made a vet appt for Sat. Nov. 14 and her blood work and urine culture were done. Both were perfect (including her one functioning kidney), but after work on Nov. 16 when I got home, something still wasn't right and she seemed unresponsive when I came home from work. We took her to the ER doctor and she received IV fluids and some anti-nausea meds. She came home and seemed to feel a little better. We had an ultrasound appt for Thursday, Nov. 19 at the specialty vet to check out her gall bladder and liver, because something still wasn't right. We found new cancer nodules in her liver, but no signs of bleeds. They took an x-ray of her neck because it seemed super sensitive and they found 4 fractured but healing ribs on the right side. What the heck!!! Nov. 7 at my mom's house she ran into the glass sliding door and this is the only thing I could think of that would do this. She was sent home with a Fentanyl pain
patch and after a full day she started crying and whining, we were in Lake Tahoe for the weekend so after calling the ER vet we decided to remove the patch, as it may have been side effects. She settled down some, but still wasn't herself. Walking in circles, her gait was unsteady and it appeared her vision was impaired. After enjoying the morning Tahoe sunshine with her,
I was still so worried about her, She was doing laps around the hot tub and seemed so off. The pain meds should have been out of her system within an hour or two at the longest. We left Lake Tahoe a day early and came home so she would be in a safe and comfortable place. She was given pain meds and anxiety meds from her general vet that evening and they seemed to take the edge off. On Sunday, Nov. 22 I took her to the emergency specialty vet where we all agreed something was going on with her Neurological system.
She stayed the night for observation and was given IV meds to calm her down and make her comfortable.
Kissing her when I left her Sunday at the Specialty Vet
The plan was for a CT scan Monday, Nov. 23. However, instead we decided on an MRI and I was able to get her in at another specialty vet that has an MRI machine. The Neurologist she saw was kind, patient, bright and compassionate. After a consult, we decided on an MRI to tell us what was going on in her brain. I watched Sass walk away with the doctor down the hall and little did I know that would be the last time I would see her walking down the hall. I got the call with the results of the MRI and there were bone abnormalities most likely from a small tumor, but we could treat the edema and when the swelling went down, her neurological symptoms would improve, including getting her eyesight back. I was thrilled to hear!, we could help her out. It would not be a cure, but we would get our girl back until the cancer decided to take over. C.J. and I were on our way to pick her up when we got the call that she wasn’t breathing on her own.
They pushed meds to help with the brain swelling and something to tell her to breathe, but nothing worked. She was on a ventilator for just over 2 hours supporting her to breathe. At that time we made the hard decision to end her suffering and tell our love bug good-bye. I honestly think this may have been her way of going out on her own terms. No ruptured hemangisarcomas on her watch. I took this Selfie in the waiting room before her MRI and I am so thankful that I did. She was standing under my legs, as I tried to snap this photo. Sassafras we will miss you, but I am confident your sister Indigo is thrilled to have you join her in paradise! Until we meet again sweet girl, mommy and daddy love you!!

It's been awhile...Time for an update

I've not updated Sassy's blog in over 2 months - we had a new health dilemma pop up in our household. First, Sassy's update the new nodules in her spleen haven't had much growth and her new lab work from last Thursday shows that her red blood cell count is awesome and that her one kidney is working like a rockstar. We celebrate these small successes!! At the end of March over Spring Break we also checked off some additional Bark It List Items and I will update those in her next blog update.
On a sadder note, we had to say good bye to Indigo Wrigley on May 1. Beginning in March shortly after we learned Sass had new nodules in her spleen, Indigo started having seizures. They were awful to watch and I felt so helpless! During the first one, I thought she was dying as I had no experience with Grand Mal Seizures. In late April after having two seizures in less than 48 hours we started her on potassium bromide and with loading doses she loss use of her back legs. However, after the loading doses ended this didn't get better. We ultimately don't know if it was the seizures that injured her spine, did she have a brain tumor since she began getting seizures later in life, was it the long-term use of prednisone that caused her back legs to give out. Her front legs were not strong enough for a cart and how do you make a dog with seizures wear a cart? We knew it was time to say good-bye as she was frustrated and didn't understand why she couldn't get around on her own. We enjoyed every minute of her last 48 hours, dining out, ice cream treats, rolling her around in her wagon, drives in the county with her sissy and the sun roof open and we planted some mini blue flowers in her honor.

Sass is dealing with the loss just as we are, one day at a time. Sass seems to be adjusting to being the only dog but misses her sister!  We knew Sass was on a limited schedule since her hemangiosarcoma diagnosis but we were not prepared to lose Indigo so abruptly. Our friends and family have been super supportive and we appreciate their compassion and understanding as we mourn the loss of our sweet girl!!!

Sassafras Update

Official Sassafras update as of Wednesday, March 4, 2015
She has 4 new nodules in her spleen. Test results show they are likely sarcoma and with her history more than likely hemangiosarcoma. This is an aggressive and deadly cancer - we were lucky when we were able to remove her first hemangiosarcoma and the kidney it was attached to. Removing her spleen and trying a new chemo will not cure this disease and Sassafras is currently happy, eating well and living large! I'd hate to make her last months full of chemo appts and healing from another surgery. We've come a long way since her initial diagnosis in July 2014. We are entering this new journey with heavy hearts but the motto to‪#‎makeeverydaycount‬‪#‎teamsassafras‬
 — feeling emotional.

Fingers and paws crossed today....

This  morning Sass has an appointment with her favorite oncologist, Dr. O'Brien and we ask that you keep your fingers and paws crossed for some good or at least stable new. It's been about four weeks since spindle cells were found in Sassy's spleen. Today is her four week recheck to see if the spindle cells have grown and/or multiplied. The ultrasound will tell us if there are any new tumors and let us know about any changes to her spleen since her last appointment. Her spleen was mottled and irregular in shape at her last appointment. Sassafras has been full of energy and enjoying two full meals a day with no bribing involved. Her fur has all grown back in and it may be darker than it was, which makes her look even younger than before she started chemotherapy. Neighborhood walks or games of ball have been part of her daily activity and she runs around the house carrying one of her many babies giving you the eyeball that says please throw my baby, so I may catch her. We continue to work on her bark it list and check items off, making memories day by day. #makeeverydaycount

Bark It List Update - Check # 12 Complete

Mom woke me up SUPER early this morning and told me let's go. I looked at her like she was crazy. However, being the good dog I am, I followed her and got in the car - where the heck are we going before the sun even comes up? 35 minutes later we arrived in a big parking lot and there were many other cars with dogs in the back seat. Who are these people/dogs and why are we here?!?  We got out of the car, mom chit chatted with the people and I thought, not doggy daycare today! I need a nap!

Then I got a purple bandanna they told me was for K9 Cancer Survivors. Heck yeah, I am a survivor just had my 4th chemo treatment on Monday! Then it dawned on me, today we were checking #12 off my Bark It List with the help of the Morris Animal Foundation. Mom watches Good Day most mornings when she gets ready for work and sometimes even emails mine and Indigo's photos into Good Day- I like seeing my mug on the big screen. We waited and waited  (remember I got up SUPER early) outside in the courtyard. Good news - I got to hang out with Dr. Bradbury and Tanner. Tanner's daddy Dr. Vida removed my tumor. I hope he knows his dad is a bad ass (Don't worry mom, this is a good thing)!
Next they put some wild booties on me for the segment on winter safety and I was a sport. I thought I would have to wear them on TV, but the segment went so fast -  I was saved the embarrassment. Thank god!! I was going to take one for the team, but was A-Okay that they forgot about that part!

AND THEN IT HAPPENED - We were ushered into the TV studio and I got to see Courtney and Ken, so cool to see them in-person when they are usually in the box in our bedroom. I tried to hide behind mom when the camera woman came walking towards us, but mom kept pushing me out in front. I guess I was supposed to soak in my 2 minutes of fame - I prefer to promote the K9 Cancer Walk and Cancer research from behind mom's computer screen via my blog, FaceBook, Instagram and Twitter! Thank you Courtney for taking the time to interview Dr. Bradbury and Sandy about seasonal dangers to pets and the upcoming K9 Cancer Walk this Sunday. Sandy has a girl Abby who is a cancer survivor - in remission even. I was honored to be able to stand next to her for the segment. The segment went by REALLY fast and then it was time to go.

Dr. Bradbury, Tanner, mom and I took a photo in the green room for my blog. You know if you don't have a photo then it didn't happen!!!

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting #teamsassafras (and especially my mom and dad - this is tough on them too) and to everyone who supports Morris Animal Foundation and their mission to find a cure for K9 cancer. I heard mom rehearsing some facts about K9 Cancer and was shocked at the numbers!

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in pets worldwide.
Nearly 6 million new dog cancer diagnoses are made each year.
Cancer accounts for nearly 50% of all disease-related pet deaths each year.

Get ready for a fun and emotional day on Sunday! Time for #Team Sassafras to celebrate life and walk in honor of all the dogs who have lost their battle to cancer. Especially Shadow my mom's first weim love.

Registration begins at 9am and the walk starts at 10am  - Don't forget to stop by the Northern CA Weimaraner Booth too. You may know my sissy is a weim, so I'm totally part weim too - right?!?
